The state courts of Jefferson County, AL are divided into various divisions, each having its own jurisdiction over certain cases.
Circuit Court is the highest county court. In Jefferson County, the civil and criminal cases are each handled by a separate division. All jury trials take place in the circuit courts. For civil cases, the circuit court has exclusive original jurisdiction over actions in which the matter in controversy exceeds $10,000. On the criminal side, the circuit court has exclusive original jurisdiction over all felony prosecutions and misdemeanor or ordinance violations which are lesser included offenses within a felony charge or which arise from the same incident as a felony charge.
District Court is the division of the Jefferson County Court system that handles all civil actions where the value of the case does not exceed $10,000. The district court has exclusive original trial jurisdiction over criminal offenses defined by law or ordinance as misdemeanors, with a few exceptions. The Domestic Relations division handles all matters regarding divorce settlements.
Family Court, or Juvenile Court, of Jefferson County handles all cases involving people under the age of 18. The court hears cases regarding children who are alleged to be delinquent, dependent or in need of supervision. The court also handles paternity cases, child support enforcement and child abuse cases. The proceedings of Family Court are confidential, and there are no jury trials.
Traffic Court is the specific division of the court system that handles all traffic violations, such as speeding tickets, traffic citations and parking tickets.
