A two-vehicle accident on Alabama 77 North Monday afternoon resulted in two people being hospitalized and snarled traffic for most of the afternoon. Alabama State Troopers, state Department of Transportation personnel, Talladega Police and Fire Department, Lincoln Fire and Rescue and a rescue helicopter and paramedics all responded.

According to Talladega Police, a Toyota 4Runner apparently pulled out in front of a Peterbilt 18-wheeler carrying a 43,000-pound metal coil bound for Precision Strip. The reckless action by the driver of the SUV caused the driver of the semi to swerve in an attempt ot avoid hitting the Toyota 4Runner resulting in the accident.  Both vehicles were totaled, with the driver and passenger of the Toyota being airlifted to University of Birmingham Hospital due to the extent of their injures. No further information was available on either of the injured parties Monday evening.

Fortunately the driver of the truck avoided being injured, but the sudden swerving action caused the coil strapped to the bed of his truck to fall off ending up in a ditch located in the median. The highway had to be closed for several hours as two wreckers worked on the median recovering the coil and clearing the wreckage.
