Vehicle accidents, involving drivers with a history of drunken driving offences, have become an increasing problem in the state of Alabama and the new legislation, recently signed into law by Govenor Bently, requiring anti-DUI devices should be a major step in curbing this growing trend, Alabama attorney Keith T. Belt says
One person is dead and another in jail after a fatal wreck Sunday on Beltline Road in Decatur.
Police said Hugh Kennedy Chandler Jr., 46, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Beltline Road around 10:20 a.m. when he failed to stop at a red traffic light at the Carridale Street intersection. The Jeep collided with a Pontiac Solstice driven by Terry White, authorities said. White was transported by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.
Chandler was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He’s being held in the Morgan County Jail and according to court records, Chandler was charged with driving under the influence in 1997. Documents show he completed DUI school after the arrest.
Had the new DUI legislation, recently passed by both houses of the Alabama legislature and signed into law by Govenor Bently, been in affect this fatality may have been avoided.
